The Patient Summary: Medications feature allows you to manage the patient's current and past medications and their details.
[Permissions] The staff member must have Full permissions to the Patient Summary module [Staff > Staff Info > System Permissions > Patient Summary]
[Accordion] Getting Started
Use the Patient Summary: Medications form to manage a patient’s current and historical medications. Select the [[img:edit]] button to update record details, including dosing information and medication details.
[Note] You cannot edit certain fields (e.g., Strength) of a Medication once it has been prescribed. To make changes, mark the existing record as Inactive and then add a new Medication record.
- [[img:add>>lbl:New]] Click/Tap to add a new Medication record
- [[img:prescriptions >> lbl:eRx Portal]] Opens the ePrescribing Portal in a separate window
- [[img:sync >> lbl:Sync Data]] Automatically synchronizes the information entered in the Patient Summary module with the eRx Portal. This is a two-way sync, so any Medications you add in the eRx Portal will also sync back to Patient Summary: Medications. This ensures that the latest/updated Medications are accurately reflected in the Patient Summary and eRx Portal for consistent record management

Adding a new Medication
[[img:add>>lbl:New]] Click/Tap to add a new Medication record.
- Medication Input:
- Select from Code Set: Click/Tap to choose a medication from the pre-entered medication list
- Code Set: The selected medication code will appear here
- Generic Name: The generic name of the medication selected
- Brand Name: The brand name of the medication selected
- Dose Information:
- Action: Choose how the medication should be taken (e.g., inject, chew, inhale)
- Quantity: Enter how much of the medication has been prescribed
- Unit: Choose the unit of measurement (e.g., box, capsule, drop)
- Route: Select the method of administration (e.g., inhale, oral, inject)
- Frequency: Select how often the medication should be taken
- Other: Additional instructions, such as when to take it (e.g., before a meal, after meal)
- Medication Details:
- Drug Type: Specify the type of medication
- Schedule Drug: Select the drug’s schedule classification based on its potential for abuse
- Strength: Select the dosage of the drug
- Dosage Form: The form of the medication (e.g., tablet, ointment)
- Duration (Days): How long the medication is prescribed for
- Quantity: The quantity of the medication prescribed (e.g., 14 tablets)
- Quantity Units: Unit of measurement (e.g., capsules, grams)
- Refills: Number of refills allowed

Status (required): Choose the current status of the medication
- Active: Indicates the medication is currently Active for the patient
- Inactive: Set the medication to Inactive when it needs to be stopped
- Discontinued: A Discontinued medication is removed from the active list and moved to the historical/inactive list
- Erroneously Charted: Use this status if the medication was prescribed or recorded by mistake
- Start Date: Enter the date when the medication was started
- Stop Date: Enter the date when the medication was stopped
- Fill Date: Set the date the medication was filled for the patient
- Erroneous Date: Entries cannot be deleted. If a data-entry error occurred, record the date the entry was marked as incorrect
- Source (required): Select how the prescription was provided (e.g., Manual, Electronic)
- Prescriber (required): Select who prescribed the medication
- Preparer (required): Enter the staff member who is filling the medication
- External Prescriber: If the medication is prescribed by an external provider, enter the prescriber's name
- Pharmacy: Select where the medication is being supplied from
- Stop Reason: Enter why the medication was stopped
- Directions to Pharmacist: Enter the instructions for the pharmacist
- Comments: Enter additional notes on the medication
- Valid CPOE: Check this box to count the medication as CPOE (Computerized Provider Order Entry)
- Efficacy (required): Select how effective the medication is
- Prescription Number: Enter a unique ID for the medication/prescription
- Substance Type: Select the category of the substance (e.g., drug, supplement)

[A] Yes, the "Directions to Pharmacist" and "Directions to Patient" fields allow you to provide additional instructions or clarifications to the pharmacist or patient regarding the medication.
